My first blog last year began on Mother’s Day and here I am again, well – very close to Mother’s Day and post Cinco de Mayo (Im from Phoenix ) ready again to share w you about the passion I have for what I do here! (Please check back to my original posting) I am thinking again of my two biggest inspirations for the business, my mother, JoAnne, and my Grandma Angie. Neither one is with me anymore and I keep them close by sharing an important mission with them. Oh my, how these 2 would love to have been a part of this business of mine. They were both health nuts too. Both were also strong entrepreneurs and I am so fortunate to have had these role models in my life and for my business.

My biggest mission is to get you to take 100% responsibililty for your health. If you need drastic results, detox with us and let’s get going on getting you healthier. Doctors can’t help if you don’t help them. You don’t want that kind of help, anyway.. If you have any kind of ailment, from allergies to MS, pure organic fresh food can make it better! Food is medicine and Delicious Planet is your pharmacy!
At the same time, none of this will work if you try to make yourself do it, or beat yourself up about it.. You must try to love yourself enough that this makes sense – treating your body well since it does such a great job every day for you. Now, just give it what it really wants…nourishment, not cravings from that kooky part of your brain…but real nourishment that the body needs and wants. It will reward you – I promise! Gently, change your lifestyle so that it becomes a routine. Make it normal, not “oh, Im really good because today I did this!” You must get used to spending more money because eating cheap junk is great for the wallet, but that wallet might be sitting on a bigger butt cheek than need be, right Thin and healthy does usually mean that the budget has shifted to the prevention/wellness side. High quality supplements, shopping organic, massage, alternative health care and a gym membership has to be part of your normal life. REALLY! How much would you pay per month to feel great and to know that you are setting your body up to do the best job it can do for you – forever. Oh, and the whole looking fabulous part – now that can be motivating too, eh?

I am so grateful that this ten year old business has become a “lifesaver” for so many people here in Seattle! Whether you order meals from us, detox with us every year, or if you just follow along reading our wellness tips on Facebook and Twitter, you are part of our Delicious Planet family. We want to inspire you to choose better, expect better and we want to nurture you with this excellent food and save your life! You know, the little things

Thank you for listening to me and my opinions. It is my reason for existence, to teach what I know, to try to be a good example of this lifestyle and to affect everyone I can. I love you all and want to see you happy and in excellent health  Yes, YOU!!

Am I weird? Taking good care of myself makes me high. I’m serious! It must be because I do our Delicious Detox 2x a year and I actually know what it feels like to reach that level of feeling great that most people don’t ever experience. It’s like an athlete must feel when they get into “the zone” or that high a drug addict always wants to reach. Soo…I always strive to get back to that feeling when I stray from my usual healthy fare and start eating what the typical American eats and then rationalize why that’s okay…Ex: emotional support foods – “I deserve this..had a hard day…blah blah”. I eat out, I snack on junk and foods Im sensitive/allergic to, I enjoy it for awhile. Then, my general quality of life starts to deteriorate. Most people are okay with feeling like this because they think it is perfectly normal. They’re used to it. When I get there I become whiny about minor symptoms that show up again and especially notice the bloating and loss of energy. This tells me to “steer on back home, Randi. Remember how it feels over here?” Remember how good it is when you honor your health and know that you are not going to age like the average American – inside or out?! See, eating/exercising well means that you are setting up a very different future that can prevent or greatly reduce prescription usage, doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, huge medical bills and just feeling badly.

Those excuses we all make when we choose to eat crappy food…it’s just that part of the brain that will always try to derail us. See it for what it is – it ain’t goin away and it also ain’t the REAL you! Gently nudge it off your shoulder and come on over to the wellness side, love! It feels so darn gooooood over here.

Randi’s RANT – now why is it that Whole Foods & PCC and all of our other wonderful partners in “health” can’t serve more organic prepared food in their delis? They do a very small portion, but they are misleading us, eh? Buy organic groceries here, but we aren’t going to turn around and make that organic food for you here – it’s too expensive. Come on! Delicious Planet is making a living doing this and so can they! I have asked the employees at these establishments often about this and there is still no progress here…years later. Please put your vote in and ask these grocery stores to provide a truly organic product for those who stop in for a quick meal. You can make this change happen! ..or, just order from Delicious Planet – you can count on us to do almost entirely organic and local ingredients, the highest quality oils, filtered water in cooking, alternative healthier sweeteners, and real sea salt. While you’re at it, let’s keep asking for more organic products, foods at all of our restaurants too, Costco, and from your corporate caterers, etc. They are listening to us now more than ever. Thanks for caring.

Cheaters need love too..

Yeah, you would be shocked at how I eat sometimes! I have to come clean with my customers and confess. I am absolutely passionate about my mission here at Delicious Planet ..but there are those times I cave into stress, I don’t grocery shop or order from DP and I morph into the “average American”. Ugh!! I start pretending that I didn’t study nutrition and I go into this blissful ignorant world. I eat nachos, pizza, ice cream and LOTS of chocolate and I “think” I’m heaven. Well, then my ear starts hurting , the walls start shaking (not really), my nose gets stuffy, the weight creeps up, and I start needing coffee in the morning to wake up. Eventually, I will have that magical morning when I just decide ENOUGH!! I burst out of bed ready to greet the day and I eat my granola, I go back to yoga & I’m thrilled to be back in the saddle again! Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I used to beat the heck out of myself for this in the past for this behavior – “Randi, you know better”! Well, ENOUGH of that too! Nowadays, I at least know my pattern and it doesn’t last forever. I try another angle and I recognize that what I may really need is some extra gentleness with myself, rather than that stern “talking to” that tends to happen.

So what if we fall off the wagon sometimes? Self forgiveness is what I will continue to try at these valleys in my life. Good plan!

Tips for when you are in a cheatin’ mood:

1.	Compromise…you don’t have to go full hog. Example – if I must have pizza, I will order from a high quality place or have frozen organic one. I will have a salad too and will drink one Emergen-C Vitamin C packet since it is a natural antihistamine and may help a bit w/the ear, nose & throat reaction that happens for some sensitive to wheat and dairy. Oh yeah, and jope rope while you wait for your pizza delivery for at least 5 minutes. I don’t do this but I just thought that this would be an excellent addition!
2.	Meditate ..with the emphasis on how much you LOVE yourself AS IS. Find it “cute” that sometimes you fall off of the track (silly Randi) and how it is absolutely wonderful that you always find your way back to health. Yay!
3.	Make an agreement w/yourself that at these weaker moments in life, you will make a truly nourishing plan for yourself right then. Schedule a massage, sleep in a few mornings, rent some movies – whatever truly FEEDS/NOURISHES you other food.
4.	Lighten up. Shut up (the negative self talk, I mean). Do your best. LOVE yourself.
Okay, now we know that I am not a perfect little example of healthy living, but that I strive for it every single day.

Joke: What do you do if a nutritionist knocks on your door? ‘vitem in. (vitamin) 

I am launching my first blog on Mother’s Day as I sit here at Grand Central Bakery in my neighborhood of Eastlake in Seattle. I notice lots of mothers around having breakfast w/their families and started thinking that this is perfect timing! I remembered the pancake breakfasts at St. Agnes Church and the carnations that all the mothers received and pinned to their Sunday dresses.

What I realized when contemplating my first blog today, was that the women in my life were and still are a HUGE influence on my passion for this business and my success. I’m going to share with you the path that’s made it obvious that my business is my destiny !

My mother was also self employed and an incredibly strong, courageous woman. She was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer at 37 years of age and was told that she had only a few months to live. She lived another 7 ½ years. I learned about courage and commitment from my mother and also that the food you choose really does matter. I saw her prolong her life with healthy food as a huge part of it. She made a huge lifestyle change, eating fresh whole foods from Gentle Strength Coop in Tempe, AZ while she was being treated at an alternative medicine clinic in Mexico.

My grandma taught me about nourishment. She loved her grandchildren unconditionally. I remember her saying things like “honey, I love you with ALLLLL my heart”. She had no idea how much that meant to me. It sounded like all of the love in the whole world to a kid. I remember telling her once that a boy kept staring at me when we were at a Peter Piper Pizza when I was maybe 8 or 9 and her telling me “well, he’s staring at you because you are so beautiful! She said it so intensely that it stopped you in your tracks.

She had a wonderful tradition of making us all an elaborate dinner for each birthday. We had to choose the roast beef or fried chicken dinner with gravy, mashed potatoes, cucumber tomato salad, and green beans OR the fried chicken dinner with all of the previously mentioned sides – but w/chicken gravy..mmm. This was an excruciating decision, folks. I remember I always wanted more time to choose, but I always had to decide right away when she called me from the grocery store. And then there was the unforgettable same red velvet birthday cake. In later years we were devastated when she refused to put the red food coloring in because she heard it caused cancer. I own that red velvet cake recipe but it just really isn’t the same without her delivering it in person to your house in her green VW bus! Grandma would take us to a health store Hadley’s Orchards in Phoenix so that we could buy granola, dried fruits, and scoop fresh raw nuts out of these big barrels. Every thanksgiving she would drive 2 ½ hours north to Young’s Farm where she would buy a couple natural turkeys for us. These turkeys were free range before free range was “hip”. No hormones or antibiotics either. She wanted a fresh, not frozen turkey and the drive was well worth it. She was always reading about medicinal herbs and other alternative medicine books. She had survived breast cancer herself and at that point in my childhood, her son, my Uncle Chuck had overcome non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She used to go out into the desert to harvest chaparral to boil into a liver cleansing tea for him. This is where my interest in nutrition sparked. I loved reading her How to Herb book and it is still on my shelf today. Being surrounded by cancer on that side of the family also sparked my interest in cancer prevention – for my own sake!

When we were sick, our busy mother sent us off to grandma’s where she would have those bendy straws, Canada Dry ginger ale to settle our stomachs, and for some reason that she could never really explain to us -frozen grapes ( a Phoenix thing?). When I got a little better, she would bake one of those terrible frozen pizzas with the square pepperonis and serve it on a t.v. tray where I would get to stay up late with her to watch her shows. Now that pizza was not organic and was even partially hydrogenated, and yet on a t.v. tray in front of Fantasy Island or Murder She Wrote, that frozen Frisbee was transformed into a magical feast. I must confess that once in awhile I still go down to Pete’s Market in my neighborhood to buy one of those nasty pizzas – hoping that I don’t see anyone I know there. People expect me to be the perfect little health nut, you know.

Two incredible women, Jo Anne Carter and Mary Angelle McMurtry, inspired me to always look at alternative solutions, that food can save your life, and that no matter what – keep on going. It made me feel so good to share this with you! I am very passionate about our mission here and I will continue to show you how thrilled I am to do what I do.
